maximumrocknroll.com (USA) May 2025 Long-haired punkers posing with their pets makes a fitting cover image for this beastly little split. Berlin’s S.U.G.A.R. provides two straightforward rockers that, though delivered with an inherent maturity, are still loaded with freewheelin’ spirit of the cut-off sleeves variety, including a classic cover that they’re known to use as an encore. The BLOWERS side is unabashed attitude, with three tracks of bratty, lo-fi, RAMONES-y garage capped off by the acoustic tearjerker “Fuckwit in a Band.” It’s a tasty platter suitable for all species. fasterandlouderblog.blogspot.com (USA) April 2025 You've got to love Daniel at Alien Snatch Records, who frequently releases 10-inch vinyl records simply because they are freaking cool. For a label owner, there is no real financial incentive to put out a 10-inch EP. You just have to love the aesthetics of it. And for a record collector, this is a fun format — a veritable mini-album! Alien Snatch's latest 10-incher is a split which finds Berlin's mighty S.U.G.A.R. paired with Australia's Blowers. So we've got two of the top bands in today's garage/punk scene represented here. The S.U.G.A.R. side contains the roaring, straight-forward punk rock 'n' roll of "Electric Chair" plus a great cover of God's classic "My Pal." Blowers' side features four tracks of raw & super lo-fi garage punk. Blowers have a new album coming out at the end of the month that's gonna blow your ears right off your head. In the meantime, these tracks will whet your appetite. This was a well-conceived split. If you like one of these bands, you are almost certain to like the other. addtowantlist.com April 2025 Not sure which idea came first, but Blowers (Naarm/Melbourne) and S.U.G.A.R. (Berlin) have joined forces for both a European tour (this May) and a split 10” (out now) on Alien Snatch Records. Each band takes up equal time on the 45RPM platter, though for S.U.G.A.R. that means two songs, while Blowers squeeze in four. S.U.G.A.R. offer a reminder of how unpolished and gloriously sleazy their garage rock ‘n’ roll is, while Blowers bring their budget garage punk with the nasty, no-frills attitude it demands. A primal release best enjoyed in a cave or a dingy basement. (Niek)
blowupmagazine.com May 2025 Uno split 10 pollici condiviso con i berlinesi S.U.G.A.R. su etichetta Alien Snatch! spinge gli australiani Blowers ad affrontare un tour europeo in compagnia del gruppo tedesco. Apre la formazione di Melbourne e ci mette un po’ a carburare, solo dalla terza canzone in scaletta sembra che il quartetto abbia finalmente oliato gli ingranaggi. Rispetto ai dischi, in cui il garage estremo dei Blowers viene passato attraverso il filtro distorto di band come Retards o Spits, appare evidente una caratteristica che le prove su vinile hanno fin qui camuffato e che solo l’ultimo lavoro, “Blowmania”, ha iniziato a mettere in luce, ovvero una vena melodica pop punk. Un pezzo come “Wasted On My Own”, sparato a metà set, è lì a dimostrarlo. Il gruppo pesca a piene mani dai tre album e, in assenza di una tastiera che ne sottolinei la matrice synth-punk, è appunto quella più bubblegum a emergere. Tra una corda di chitarra saltata all’improvviso, qualche battuta scambiata con il pubblico in prima fila, il concerto scorre via veloce senza però dare mai l’impressione di decollare. Poi è la volta degli S.U.G.A.R. che per me sono una totale novità, non avendo mai avuto modo di ascoltarli né di vederli dal vivo prima d’ora. Il terzetto di Berlino attacca con veemenza e nei primi pezzi dà l’impressione di surclassare i compagni di etichetta. Il loro punk rock è duro ed efficace, a tratti con influenze alla Mötorhead, e gli astanti, ora più numerosi, sembrano apprezzare. Alla lunga, però, la formula risulta piuttosto monotona, anche se in certi frangenti il guitar-sound mostra addirittura venature metal. Last but not least, un’osservazione sul pubblico composto, per una volta, prevalentemente da trentenni. Come già sperimentato con i Chats, è la conferma che queste nuove band hanno un seguito proprio che finalmente prescinde dalla vecchia guardia. E questa, a conti fatti, è la nota più positiva dell’intera serata (RC)
OX #180 May 2025 Ist das 10“- Vinyl ein Mini-Album oder eine Maxi-EP? Egal, Hauptsache, es läuft auf 45 RPM. Alien Snatch bringt hier Berlins Kellerkneipen-Punks S.U.G.A.R. mit den Melbourner Garage-Wüstlingen BLOWERS zusammen, erstere füllen knapp siebeneinhalb Minuten der einen Seite mit zwei Songs, zweitere schaffen in der selben Zeit gleich vier Tracks. S.U.G.A.R. kommen etwas ausdefinierter daher, mit dem geradlinig-sleazigen Proto- Punk-Klopfer „Electric chair“ aus einem Klangkonvolut zwischen COSMIC PSYCHOS und RADIO BIRDMAN sowie mit einem nah am Original bleibenden Cover von „My pal“ der australischen GOD von 1988. BLOWERS stellen auf der anderen Seite ihr schlichtes 1-2-3-4 Budget-Rock-Handwerk unter Beweis, siehe dazu auch das Review zu ihrem letztem Album „Blowmania“ in dieser Ausgabe. Diese Paarung passt wie Arsch auf einer Eimer – nicht nur auf diesem Release sondern auch im Rahmen einer anstehenden gemeinsamen Europatour (MB)
