greennoiserecords.com (US) Aug 2026 Ian Manhire (White Wires, The Sedatives, Uranium Comeback, The New Calling...) picks the perfect name for this new band, for several reasons, and delivers pure pop gold on this debut album by RETROSPECTS (with great artwork from Alien Snatch regulars Sam Torzina and A-Hule-Hule), the long player featuring a bag of nuggets polished into a palm full of cat’s eyes, swirls, and steelies, all the tunes just chock full of charm, the click of marbles rattling in your pocket, humming with analog synthesizers and unapologetic honesty...the narratives like scenes in a movie...the rhythms moving like the flickering of celluloid through a projector...when the spring comes, you kick the salted ice from the fenders...rub the rust from the chrome...Friday night slide off your sneakers and lace up the roller skates and hit the wooden floor at the local roller rink...in the kitchen Jiffy Pop shaking on the cast iron of the gas stove...the music casting a spell and keeping the promise from go to whoa...a continuation of that unique Ottawa/Canadian sound (that I’d argue goes back 60 years, long before people even used words like power pop and punk rock to describe music), expanding on that Canada sound while paring it down to its center...to its heart...rising out of melancholy to something that sounds like hope...launching like a water rocket out of davenport power pop and sounding like understated anthems for the underdogs, working class and regular folks...pop anthems for the end of summer, standing barefoot on the cool grass with a jar of dandelion wine in your hand, fireflies in the night sky, weathered eyes still shining like stars...long may you run...shine on my Ontario brothers and sisters. .(mw)
manierenversagen.de (GER) SEP 2026 Erinnert ihr euch noch an New Calling, diese Band, die nur ich toll finde und die irgendwie ansonsten jedem anderen Menschen komplett am Arsch vorbeiging? Das war damals bei Subfiction Records erschienen und damit auch die einzige Veröffentlichung des Labels von unserem Freund Eric (Chiller/Feral Trash/Cheap Whine, etc.). Damals schon driftete Ian Manhire, der Sänger und "Kopf" der Band, in elektronischere Gefilde ab, obwohl das "nur" ne Orgel war, aber irgendwie ist der Synthesizer schon im Hinter"kopf" des Sängers der White Wires zu hören. Und jetzt, 9 Jahre später, macht er dort weiter, wo er mit dem Dark Wave Pop aufgehört hat. Die Restrospects realisieren komplett ohne Saiteninstrumente einfach nur noch mit Synthesizer ihre Wunschvorstellung aus den 80er Jahren und zaubern erstklassigen Synth-Pop mit Garage Punk Melodien ins Wohnzimmer mit Fliesentisch. Toll. Hier das selbst betitelte Debüt aus dem Jahr 2024. Ich mein, wie viel besser kann Pop eigentlich sein, wenn man die großartigen Melodien von Sedatives und New Calling mit dem Gesang der White Wires kombiniert? Da würde ich auch direkt 2 Platten von machen. Oh, seht her: Noch mehr aus der zuckersüßen Popquelle namens Ottawa. Eine neue Platte aus dem Jahr 2026. Alien Snatch. Auf Vinyl erschienen. VOIX DE GARAGE Sep 2026 Alien Snatch Rds réédite les 2 albums des canadiens de Retrospects originellement paru l’an passé sur Vintage Voltage Rds (et découvert par ici grâce au single sorti en 2025 par Fish & Cheap Rds). Retrospect mérite son patronyme et nous replonge à la grande époque de la New Wave avec ses accents de Synth Punk bien Poppy entraînant et léger! A la 1ère écoute j’ai trouvé ça bizarre que ça soit sorti par Alien Snatch Rds puis après plusieurs écoutes j’en suis venu à me dire qu’en fait on pouvait voir Retrospects comme étant un groupe qui fait de la Power Pop mais avec des synthés vintages… ça ramènera les plus anciens d’entre-nous au temps des excitants débuts de la New Wave (avant que ça tourne à de la musique de garçons coiffeurs) ! En plus ce Re Revivalisme sonne franchement très Post Post Modern donc absolument dans l’air du temps. Et j’avoue passer pas mal de temps à dodeliner de la tête et de chanter avec le groupe que ce soit leurs refrains bien accrocheurs ou les mélodies des parties de claviers, qui sont drôlement bien chiadées!!!
