WAVE MAGAZINE (USA) OCTOBER 2006 Sometimes we record reviewers have
to admit that we just aren't that smart. Hell, sometimes we aren't even necessary!
And I'm alright with that. If a label guy does a far better job describing a
release than I ever could, I don't fight it. I don't attempt the slightest one-upmanship.
I just raise my beer in the air and say, "Right on!" Of its latest
and greatest 7-inch release, Alien Snatch says, "Murder By Guitar has the
magic like the Real Kids would back Roky Erickson on Teenage Head songs."
RIGHT ON! That description is fucking PERFECT! Why even bother coming up with
one of my own? Murder By Guitar features two members of Swedish garage-punk
sensations The Locomotions - Martin Savage and Loco Lopez (along with drummer
Rikard Johansson). Both men are billed as singers here. And the vocals on this
record are totally effing great! They're delivered with a passion and emotion
rarely heard in the powerpop genre. They're screamed, but not in a hardcore
or emo way. I'm reminded more of those classic soul singers who poured their
hearts, guts, and darkest demons into every single note they sang. As the above
description suggests, the sound is mid-tempo powerpop with a '77 punk rock n'
roll feel. I'm reminded quite a bit, actually, of the very first Alien Snatch
Records band – The johnnies. You know – it's pop, and it's punk,
but it's not pop-punk. But Murder By Guitar is a really unique-sounding band.
There's something different here - something I can't quite put my finger on.
I can definitely see fans of the Exploding Hearts getting into this group, because
both bands used the punk/powerpop form to express meaningful, deep-from-the-heart
sentiment. "Rock Bottom" and "Wrong Side of Town" are simply
amazing songs - memorable, unbelievably catchy, and dripping with raw emotion.
I sense a dark undercurrent running through this group's music. This sure ain't
happy-go-lucky sugar pop! These fellas sing as if life has totally kicked them
in the ass and left them for dead, lying in the gutter, but they have survived
and roared back with a vengeance. I can relate. Along with the last Mojomatics
EP (which also came out on Alien Snatch!), this is the best 7-inch I've heard
all year. There's a full-length Murder By Guitar album on the way, and I can't
fucking wait to hear it! (JR)
HIGH HEELS SLUT #6 (BELGIUM) AUGUST 2007 Yet another one the countless bands and project Martin Savage continues to spawn. In Murder By Guitar he teams up with one of his former bandmates from the Locomotions (and who also used to be in the Sons Of Cyrus). With this new effort they leave the broken blues and fucked up rawk’n’roll approach of their previous bands and head for something different. Let’s start at the flip this time with “I’ll Be Gone” and “Wrong Side Of Town”, two cool songs that sound like a powerpop rendition of Dead Moon. “Rock Bottom” on the A-side is a midtempo tune that lacks the Dead Moon reference and just sticks with powerpop. A nice surprise!(WC)
INCOGNITO
SNATCH)
Dig
It !
